The food bank was started in May 2013. Our aim is to provide food for the local community. We regularly have 8 or more people using our Food Bank. At Easter & Christmas we are much busier.

The Food Bank opens one day a week on a Tuesday from 10.30am-1pm. Clients come in with a voucher that allows them to get food. They are met by one or two of our volunteers who take details down then pass the voucher on to have all the details checked on the computer. If everything is ok, we then start to pack the food. How much food clients will receive depends on how many family members there are. We check if clients have any allergies or any food they cannot eat. When the food is packed we take the food out to the client, who in the meantime will have been offered a drink, and if they need a meal we can arrange for a meal from the cafe.

Clients are allowed 3 vouchers. By the end of three weeks hopefully their needs will have been sorted out, e.g. allowances, Universal Credit and various other benefits depending on the situation of the client.

We have a volunteer who, if the client wishes, will have a chat with them in private to see if anything more can be done to help them e.g. if homeless, to find them some type of accommodation, to help if there is alcohol or drug abuse, and with many other issues. We never disclose any information about the client and do our utmost to try and help them.

The volunteers are really good, we have a rota system so that we always have enough volunteers to help out.

Food is donated by various churches, local shops, schools and organisations. The Well at Farnworth have a designated warehouse where the food is stored. Until our new church is completed, families can take their vouchers to the Big Local in Little Hulton and The Well at Farnworth to get food.
